Well, that's startling. The Rube Goldberg sequence events would be comical were it not so gory. And frankly, I love it, from the nicknames to the prediction to the intervention to the narrator's frustration at his helplessness. There is a mystery here, but it does not need to be solved for this story to satisfy. (In fact, it would probably lose some of its punch if it was)
